How To: Help Your Shrubs Beat the Summer Heat
Our friends at Keifer Landscaping and Garden Center (the original home of our shrubs) say the number one factor in plant mortality is moisture, either too little or too much. They recommend:
- watering early in the morning or later in the day, 2-3 times a week for plants that have been in the ground for less than 3 years
- watering by hand-held hose to make sure the roots get wet not just the leaves. Water droplets on the leaves can magnify the effects of the sun and in turn, burn the plant
- watering heavily rather than frequently
- give your plants about twice as much water as you think they need. This is especially true if your plants are surrounded by mulch, as mulch can absorb as much as half the water you think is getting to your plant.
