Shop Til We Drop

Window Shopping: T.J. Maxx

I usually bybass the whole “Maxxinista” section of T.J. Maxx – also known as the clothes – and head straight for the home decorating section. That is unless I need jeans of course. Then I stop for a $16.99 pair of circa 1998 Calvins and call it a day.

Yesterday I window shopped on my way to the thread store next door and found the following to be interesting.

Graphic thank you cards. Only $4, and they were not all pink.

Gold spray-painted coral.

But classy because it’s on a lucite base.

Considering pirate cupcakes for my birthday next month.

Did you guys not buy anything kind of cool and cheap this weekend?

You Have Until Wednesday

To scoop up this lovely lady on eBay.

She’s quite the looker and currently only selling for $95, and the shipping is only $30. That’s a steal for furniture. Have you ever looked at what Pottery Barn or IKEA tries to charge to ship furniture?

I think you should consider her. I might switch out the top with a mirror for added bling.

Window Shopping: Palm Avenue

Confession. I have never entered a Lilly Pulitzer store before in my life. For some reason since visiting Palm Avenue in Raleigh’s Cameron Village for the first time, I now feel like this was a mistake.

Look at how awesome this dining table sofa is. Would you use this?

What about these gold wall-creatures?

Or this chair?

Such a great shop full of great colors. I’ll admit my only hesitation in not turning window shopping into real shopping was the fact that Furb has so many similar items right around the corner – and it’s a local business.

On a side note Lilly also carries some of the gorg enamel jewelry from our very own shop too! Small world. That Lilly, she has great taste.

$150 Pink Polo

Would you buy one?

What if it was made by Lacoste? Had a ridiculously oversized gator on it?

Was sold by Jonathan Adler? Came with a “free” pillow?

The hubs might condemn such sillery - but I admit, the temptation was there for 17 and a half seconds.

Alas, I would prefer to save my lunch money for half of one of those bar carts from yesterday.

Dog Tested

Have you guys seen these commercials?

Well they worked on this gal who had a love for dogs, a love for Subaru Outbacks and a Cobalt on its last leg.

In December we shared with you guys the auto saga of a replaced car battery and a towing out of the lawn (which was admittedly my own fault).

I even hinted around about the new alternator that I had to buy two weeks later, see that post here. Obviously the battery wasn’t the problem.

What you didn’t hear about was the leaking heater core, the overheating car and the gallons of coolant that were sloshing around under the passenger side of my car on Monday morning. Not a great way to start your week – another grand in the hole on a car that you’re not sure you should keep driving. We’ve been giving the AAA Car Center so much business that they asked me to write a review for their members magazine. That’s too much business.

So after much discussion and a little number crunching, the decision was made. And, I am now driving what I think is going to be an awesome long-term, slightly rugged, but slightly luxurious automobile. You’ll have to remember that my “luxury” gauge is low considering my Cobalt was not equipped with power locks or windows.

The verdict: a 2012 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited.

Me likey.

Chad likey.

The pups will likey once mama decides to let their stinky tails in it. It’s only been with us about 36 hours so I’m still enjoying the new smell sans puppy.

BUT, the purpose of this post isn’t to shout out to my sweet new ride – okay well, maybe just a little. Rather, the point was to share with you guys 1. where I purchased this wonderful little machine, because I had a great experience and 2. share some tips that I picked up before going in to make the deal.

1. I went to Johnson Subaru in Cary. I chose Johnson because they seemed to have the largest selection of Outbacks to choose from in our area. I also like their old commercials.

 2. The only other time I have purchased a car was in 2006. Thankfully my dad was with me. However, I don’t really remember “making the deal” since I let Dad handle the biznass of it all.

So to prepare myself I did what I do before making any big purchase. I Google-d. I Google-d like a wild woman. Here are the car shopping tips that I compiled and took with me to the dealership.

So that’s  a LOT of words just to say:   The process was a little nerve-wrecking and I was definitely making pancakes by the end of the day (yes that’s another gross sweat reference), but in the end it was absolutely worth it.  I adore every little inch of my new Outback, feel very proud of the big-girl negotiations,  and am hopeful that this is another long-term car for our little family.

The weather was nasty this weekend so I don’t really have a picture to share, but you guys get the idea.

Fu Dogs At Target

Thank you Tar-jay.

You never let me or my quest for quirky home decor on a budget down.

They aren’t available online right now, but there appear to be several stores in our area with some in stock. Yes.

On our trip to San Fran last year I searched for days for a great pair of Fu Dogs that were actually within my budget - without much success. At $9.99 each these are just right. The grey color is also much more subtle than many Fu’s you’ll find out there. A great way to ease into the trend.

P.S. Another dog we know ate a second rabbit last night. Then she threw it up all over our bed. What. The. Fu.
