It Took Us Way Too Long To Learn
You don’t have to use the throw pillows that came with your couch. Even if your couch is six-year-old faux micro suede and the two throw pillows are the exact same shade of poo poo brown.
Just the other day our couch was looking less than lovely when we posted, bragging all about our mad arrowhead hanging skillz. With a z.
Thank you all for saying sweet things about our beloved arrowheads and for not commenting to say things like, “Hey Chad and Amy, your couch is so boring and brown. A wombat could get totally lost on that thing and you’d never know it.” Okay, maybe I’ve taken that a little far. Are wombats even poo-poo-faux-micro-suede-sofa-brown?
We tried our hand at colored pillows in the past like this orange and yellow one, seen in our current collection of house tour photos.
They are not too bad but they are still w-a-y matchy-matchy with our living room rug which obviously has orange in it, as well as yellow diamonds which barely show up in this picture. Trust us they’re there.
Plus, the brown throw pillows that came from Haverty’s are on the couch in this picture too, with the yellow and orange. Can you even see them? Probably not because they’re so brown they are virtually invisible to the untrained, pillow-spotting eye.
Then it dawned on us, nowhere on the financing paperwork for this starter sofa was an agreement to always use these two poo poo pillows. Nowhere. And yes, I had to finance my first sofa. I think it took me 18 months to pay for a $700 sofa. It was my first piece of furniture and I made somewhere north of the federal poverty level. I’ve never done the math to find out how much this sofa really cost me over 18 months. Anyhoo… it’s still workin’ it after six years. Kinda like Kanye.
With our new-found pillow knowledge we’re thinking, out with the poo poo and in with some fun, bright, graphic pillows. Plus, we threw that yellow and that orange pillow into our guest bedroom, seen here. So as of today, this is how we’re looking.
You’ll notice for now we’ve moved one sofa pillow into the orange chair but at least they are no longer camouflaged on our couch. Instead we’ve added our two green lattice pillows which we purchased from Belk for $2 each. Yes. New, from Belk, two days before Christmas. Two bucks each. Which is a good thing because they balance out our pricier pillow covers from Willa Skye Home via Etsy.
We love the fun graphic pattern with the navy blue background – they help bring the navy blue of our painted curtains across the room and onto the sofa. Good stuff.
The green pillows are just cheap and fun. They were cheap enough that we could easily be persuaded to switch them out for others in the future if something new strikes our fancy.
One easy step towards a jazzier, more colorful couch. Sans poo poo.

Soooo much better!! I on the other hand have a pillow fetish. There are five pillows on my couch at this very moment! A bit much! Jason hates it!
P.S. I LOVE your curtains! I may have told you that before, but just reiterate, you did such a great job!!
Thanks Jessica! Chad has long had a two pillow limit for the couch, but he likes these. They are pretty easy to move if they get in the way of course.
Love the new look with the pillows! I also love the chest your pup is laying on in front of the window. Where did it come from? We are looking for something very similar for our little dog to sit on so she can look out the window all day.
That’s exactly what our pups do! I would actually love to move it out from under the window because I don’t think that it looks the best but I was rather have happy pups that a perfect room. My father in law actually made it though. It was Chad’s bedroom toy box as a kid. Fun right?
Yay for inspiration. My couch is boring sage at the moment-we need color!! Thanks for pushing me in the right direction.
