Exotic Sea
Vacation? No – we wish.
But our new candle holders are the second-best thing. Mostly because they were cheapskate Goodwill finds from the store on Hargett Street in downtown Raleigh. One of the wife’s favorite lunch time hangouts. Well there, and Sushi Blues.
It’s tough to see upside down, but they were a whopping $1.29 each, which times two equals $2.58 for the pair.
Honestly we weren’t sure what to do with them at first, hang them over the sofa, in the dining room, paint them, polish them, leave them be?
After giving them a test run next to our full length mirror in the master bedroom, the light bulbs went off.
Their scrolled design was pretty cool and having two kept the symetry thing going, which we like. Two windows, two sets of curtains, two candle holders. Good stuff.
The boring bronze just wasn’t right. Maybe it wasn’t whimsical enough for us? Who really knows. We’re whimsical folks you know. So the wife ran to Lowe’s and busted out her spray paintin’ pants for yet anothing painting project. Cause we’re painting folks too.
We settled on a color called Exotic Sea, in a gloss spray paint by Valspar. What’s pretty nifty about the Valspar line of spray paints is that you can get the same colors mixed up in regular paint to coordinate all around your room – especially cool if you’re like us and will paint anything that sits still.
As you can tell, we pulled the color from our curtains. Read all about how we made those right here. This Exotic Sea blue also looks pretty close to the blue tone of our new bedroom lamp, which we nicknamed Kim here.
But back to those painting pants…
After about two coats of glossy exotic-ness we were left with two candle holders that looked a little less like this:
And a lot more like this:
And eventually this:
They’re shiny.
And fancy.

Always wondered what to do with stuff like that I have seen at goodwill. What a great color!
Wow! They look AWESOME! I love your ideas. You really make everything look easy. If I were you, I’d smile everytime I walked into the room :-)

Wow – that is the exact color isn’t it! Great find!
LOVE IT! You always make me want to drive out to the thrift store lol. But I can’t without spending too much lol.
hmmmm….now I;m thinking… I’ve got a set just like those. They are sitting in a box awaiting a yard sale…..but now…maybe not!
Question….. did you prime them first?? Or rough them up?? if not, do you think the paint is going to stay on them??
Thanks for the inspiration!
ps: your pooches are adorable!!
Thanks Cheryl! We did not prime them because they were pretty old and the surface felt kind of rough to begin with. They sell spray paint primer too in the same aisle at the store so if yours are super-slick or you just want to be on the safe side we’d recommend going for the primer.
One of my very favorite colors to spray stuff with!!
Great isn’t it!
