Oh Yeah, We Finished Those Curtains
For a couple of weeks now we’ve been working on two sets of curtains for our living room windows. Four panels total. You might remember that we are making these ourselves, out of two canvas drop cloths purchased from Lowes and a stencil purchased from Olive Leaf Stencils. DIY to the max.
Last weekend we finally finished them. Or at least the “them” for our living room. We’d like to tackle the dining room with the same curtains since the rooms flow into one another so openly. Those will come soon enough, but for now we’re taking a break from the spouncing and stenciling to focus on more fun projects like dressing up our back porch and Chad’s office.
Yes, we have design ADD and yes, we did finish that paint job in his office – just have to take some pics. One post at a time.
But back to our curtains. We’re still blogging/photography novices so we haven’t quite mastered taking a great photo of our living room windows. The light is always too bright or too dark to get the right image – but here’s our best effort to date. We need to practice our white balancing for sure.
The Ikat pattern was a great choice for fabric painting because it is meant to be an imperfect design. True Ikat is a dyed fabric with irregularities so the stenciling looks pretty authentic and any minor smudges look natural to the design. We are really really happy with the finished product – just wish we could photograph it better.
They look pretty good next to our longhorns too, which hang over the television. They were a housewarming gift from the Texan’s parents so the horns had to go in a prominent location – I have to say they’ve grown on me over the past two years.
It’s nice that they frame the television and horns. Before the curtains were hung it always seemed like the longhorns were the first thing people noticed in the room. Now the curtains help share the attention – we just hope it’s the right kind of attention.
All of the how-to details for our curtain painting project were included in a past Durham Magazine blog post. You can read all about it right here. You can also see past curtain painting posts here and here.

I have to say that when I first saw the stencil, I didn’t care for it. But seeing the finished product, I love it! I think I might try this route for my living room curtains…
They look fantastic!
They look amazing! I would never guess that you painted them. They look similar to this office chair that I LOVE: http://pinterest.com/pin/59302863/
These are awesome, great job! I may have to borrow this idea from you.
PS what is your wall color?
Thanks Hilary! Our living room wall color is Tapestry Beige by Benjamin Moore.
Amy, you guys did a fabulous job!! You should definitely submit this project to Little Green Notebook or another popular blog. They turned out so great!! It almost makes me want to do some of my own! Almost. :) I’ve got too many other things to worry about right now! Maybe next winter. Haha! Great job!! (I can’t say that enough)

That said it took them 8 months to follow your trend. I like the weight & color of your drop canvas curtains more, and certainly the price tag!
The bar looks great fully stocked with Jackson’s additions of some lighting & 2 bar stools. So hopefully I will be sending you a picture soon!
