Jonathan Adler Eat Your Heart Out

One little tidbit we left out of yesterday’s post about our recent trip to Chicago was our trek into the Jonathan Adler store on Wabash Avenue.  We l-o-v-e the colorful, happy chic-ness of Mr. Adler’s style, although we’re admittedly questioning the new line of sybaritic styles complete with porcelain devil busts, marijuana leaf votives, etc. But we guess to each their own when it comes to home design right?

Every inch of the shop was perfectly staged and poised for purchasing while good tunes were pumped in from above – always a plus. Bad music, bad store – or restaurant for that matter. Firm belief.

We are ashamed to admit – we didn’t buy a thing. That’s right. We were able to pick up and hold, touch, feel, smell all that is Jonathan Adler (okay too far, a little creepy but true) and we didn’t buy anything. That’s partially because I didn’t see this guy in the shop.

White ceramic animals even go well with wine. But we’re here to tell you today, that white ceramic ain’t just for animals anymore. We’re moving on to sea urchins now. Wait – is that an animal too?

The show room was full of lots of little white vases shaped like sea urchins and gourds and other curiosities, made of matte white ceramic. Each would run you at least $28 or so, so we decided to knock one off for about $6 instead.

It all started out with a 99 cent vase/bowl from Michael’s Craft Store. You may even have something similar around your casa with no need to shop.

Then we added some three-dimensional dots with Tulip puff-paint, also purchased from Michael’s for $1.78.

Finally, we just painted the bloody thing with matte white Krylon spray paint that we had on hand, but will typically run you $3. Okay, so it’s not really bloody and we’re not British but I’ve always wanted to type that phrase somewhere and I’m watching a throwback episode of Frasier right now. Daphne had me in the bloody mood.

I’m usually a glossy gal when it comes to the white spray paint, you saw that when we took a Goodwill ceramic bull through the spray paint ringer.  When trying to knock off something of Jonathan Adler quality the matte paint makes a huge impact and gives the cheap vase a luxe feeling – in an under the sea kind of way.

This little guy is resting on our bedroom dresser right now, you can see in the background a new piece of artwork we recently scored, but more on that soon. For now just check out this website for hints.
