Bold and Bright Curtains – No Sewing
If you’re one of the readers that we share with Durham Magazine, it’s likely that you’ve seen this week’s DM Blog feature about our master bedroom curtains. They are finally finished – without a stitch involved.
Lookin’ pretty good. One wall of our bedroom is really starting to come together with a wall-mounted mirror and bold, bright, DIY curtains. Rather than repeat the entire process in this post we’ll refer you to our DIY guide found by clicking here. There you’ll find full instructions and lot of images of the process.
It didn’t take very long at all, about an hour and half – or just three Seinfeld episodes if you prefer to measure your day in units of TV time.
More creativity was needed to get them up on the wall than to actually non-sew them. Let us illustrate.
Our two bedroom windows are r-e-a-l-l-y close to the adjacent walls. So close that a curtain rod with any sort of finial cannot be mounted into the corner. Big bummer. Especially since we had our heart set on chunky oversized curtain rods to match the shape of our spherical bed posts.
Not ones to admit defeat (hello, we sawed a table in half just because it was only $25, but more on that later) we decided that there was no actual rule against only having one finial on your curtain rods. Right? Sorry for this pinky picture – not sure what happened with el camera.
They just look like they are growing out of the wall. We don’t mind, it’s a bit different and we like the quirkiness. Plus, when the curtains are hung on the rods you barely notice.
If you’re curious, the rods came from Target and were $19 each. We thought this was a bargain for such an oversized drapery rod. We’ll save the finials of course, in case the rods are ever moved around the house. In the meantime we’ve been brainstorming alternative uses for them like tie backs… we’ll see.
What have you guys been working on lately? Any colorful DIY projects to brag about? Spill ‘yer beans.

Ugh, I have a window just like that in my master bedroom. WHY do builders make windows so close to the wall. I like your idea of just cutting one off. I currently have one of those “U” cheapo curtain rods and I don’t like it.
I really like that pattern! Where did you get the fabric?
Just found your blog and I love you’re style! You have been bookmarked.
could you email and tell me where you got the fabric.. or the name of it? LOVE THEM!
