How To: Make a Simple Pillow
All this talk of Mary Jo’s has reminded me of my first trip there so many months ago. It has also reminded me that we still had a scrap of green trellis fabric left over from our first purchase, the remainder of which was used to make an upholstered headboard. See the instructions from that project here.
When trimming the fabric for the headboard, we were careful to cut neatly so that few remaining inches could be used for something else in the room. This afternoon we finally put together that something else.
Enter one small sewing kit, picked up on a trip to K-Mart with Grandma Whited during her last visit.
All you have to do is cut your fabric evenly into whatever shape your pillow is going to be and invert it before sewing – because you’ll be turning it inside out when finished. If you are using a patterned fabric make sure to line up the pattern exactly where you want it before stitching. Then just stitch all the way around the pillow, leaving about three inches of unstitched corner so you can add the stuffing.
Mine weren’t perfectly straight but they turned out okay. If Chad had not been working you can bet that they would have looked better – one of us gets paid to make stitches look good.
Then just turn your pillow shell right side out and stuff it. I purposely used the opposite side of my fabric from what was used for the headboard, this gave the two just enough contrast and kept them from being too matchy-matchy.
We used basic polyester fiber fill from JoAnne’s Fabrics to stuff our pillow. It will run you about $5 for a big bag. We barely put a dent in ours making this pillow.
Once you have your pillow as full and as evenly stuffed as you’d like, very neatly stitich up the corner hole that you left in order to get the stuffing in.
And BOOYA, you’ve got yourself a pillow!
