Don’t Toss Those Old Photo Frames
Turn them into something useful and personal, as exerpted from this week’s Durham Magazine Blog feature:
This week we’re bringing you guys a super quick and easy way to add a functional and personalized accessory to any room. All you need is one of those old photo frames that is laying around all of our houses and a scrap of fabric that you love.
Frame the fabric and display the frame on a table for an instant drink tray that’s unique to your decor and tastes. This “project” seriously only takes minutes – although there are lots of ways to take it to another level if you’ve got the time:
- Spray paint the frame to match your decor
- Add grosgrain ribbon around your fabric swatch for added contrast
paint a monogram or use magazine clippings as your artwork (a Durham Magazine perhaps?)
- Use fabric from something meaningful like a high school or college tee shirt, your daughter’s first blankie, etc.
- Add little rubber feet, available at any hardware store, to add a little height and keep your frame/tray from scratching your surface
We filled ours with fabric we designed ourselves at Spoonflower, located right here in Durham, and used a wooden frame that was just laying around the house. It’s now got a cozy home on the ottoman next to our guest bed. We love using storage ottomans around the house – especially with their padded, feet-friendly lids. It just makes it difficult to multi-task the ottoman for a side table – unless you add one of these little frame trays. Instant drink table at zero dollars.
