The Towel Bar Bites The Dust
Between a lot of work and one bad burrito this week (don’t ask) we realize that our DIY posts have been lacking a bit. We’ll be in full force again very soon with lots of pics and bathroom and bedroom progress. In the meantime we’ve been tackling some much smaller tasks.
Our now notorious half bathroom has always boasted a large towel bar that was a little out of proportion for the room. In the past I have hung a large bath-sized towel in the half bath just to fill out the bar – only to find that Chad had snuck in behind me to switch it out for a smaller hand-sized towel.
It’s interesting what marriage teaches you about another person. For me it is more important to have a large towel bar filled out and not left looking skimpy and for the hubs it is more important to have an appropriate sized towel for the room and not overwhelm the space with a giant towel. It’s a good thing our vows didn’t mention towels, right?
For the past several months Mr. has won the debate and a smaller towel has been hanging in there.
We’ve decided to just eliminate the issue completely by removing the towel bar and replace it with a less obtrusive hook for a small hand towel.
Removing the bar required some unusual handy work. We’ve never had to pull out our glasses kit for home projects before but the little screw attaching the bar to the mounting plate was t-i-n-y.
And of course once we were able to remove the bar, we were left with two nice sized holes in the wall. Look, our bathroom used to be green!
For now they’ve been patched with some bright pink spackle, which will dry a fresh white color while we’re working and recovering from the previously mentioned burrito (burrito + paint fumes = no bueno). As soon as it’s dry we can sand ‘er down and finish our wall trim and paint job.
Until then we’ll be sending the old bar off to Habitat ReStore and scoping out Lowes, Home Goods and even World Market, Anthropologie, and the thrift store for the best hooks we can find. Shiny and new or vintage unique? How about ceramic and animal-like?
