Color Splash

Last November we wrote up a handy little guide to choosing colors around your home. You can read all the details here.

We’ve tried to take our own advice around the casa by choosing colors that compliment one another on ye ol’ color wheel as well as placing those pops of color in our rooms in ways that move the eye up, down and all around.

This weekend we took a few more baby steps in doing this around our guest bedroom.  You’ll remember that we moved that clunky armoire from one corner to another, and by “we” we mean the ant the wifey using her now world famous blanket scoot method.

For us armoires have always been tricky things to decorate. Some things can be tough to reach if they are placed waaaay back on top, and we’re not always certain if we should hang something on the wall above them or if that looks too cluttered.

Here’s the balance we’ve struck with the big armoire in the guest bedroom.

We’ve already mentioned our clear and white lamp as well as our natural and very tan accessories. Things were looking pretty brown, white, tan and clear. Nothing to make you notice a thing on top of the armoire until we spray painted these old broken frames which happened to start out boring white and brown.

We looked at all the major colors in the room: blue, green, purple and orange. We decided to avoid blue because the armoire is framed by curtains on both sides and green because it is likely that when guests come over we’ll add greenery or flowers to the set-up for instant punches of green. That left us with purple and orange, which also happen to be secondary to each other on the ol’ wheel of color – which should mean success.

We’re happy with the results – which only ran about $6 for two cans of spray paint from True Value. And when you walk in the bedroom door  your eye instantly moves from the pops of color on the armoire down to the same colors in the pillows on the bed.

Don’t mind the supernova of a lamp, it’s nowhere near that bright in person but we couldn’t get the lighting just right in the camera and it’s too dreary outside today to benefit from any natural light. Rainy days and Mondays always get us down.
