I Have Nothing To Wear!

There’s a wedding coming up and being a typical female – my response for the past few days has been that I have absolutely nothing to wear and need to just buy a new dress.  Alas, in a brief moment of insanity that I am already regretting I decided to hit up my own closet before hitting up Southpoint (the mall here in Durham) just in case there was something hiding in there.

Unfortunately finding anything in my side of the closet is a major undertaking. I have always been pretty obsessively neat when it comes to the “public” areas of our home, while the closets have been left to conceal my vices. You’ll remember this from our pantry clean up a couple of months ago, and also our recent clean up of the dumpster carport.

But back to that moment of insanity. It was 9:40, so I decided to spend the next 20 minutes organizing my side just to see what happened. Here are the results.

The first thing I did was pull out all the unused hangers. 84 to be exact. They will be headed to the dry cleaners for recycling later today.

Secondly, I organized all items from right to left hanging dresses on the far right where there was more room for the length of some of them and then moving left: dresses, jackets, suits, sweaters, long-sleeved shirts, short-sleeved shirts, sleeveless shirts, pants and skirts.

I also moved the shoes I seldom wear to the very top shelf, and being a realist, decided to keep my favorite running shoes and green Target flats in the floor for easy access. I am trying to be organized but am not going to climb the shelves every day.

A clear storage box with the lid removed makes for easy access to my scarves and belts. The lid will go back on in the warmer months when I am not reaching in that often, allowing me to stack other things on top.  Purses went into the black monogrammed bag when not in use, this might not be realistic for everyone considering I only have three to store.

Along the way I made two piles in the closet floor, one for trash (dry cleaning bags, shopping bags, who knows what else) and one for donation. Being the nerd that I am, I had a goal in my head of getting rid of 20 items in 20 minutes. And yes this is my idea of fun.

In total I ended up with 21 items to donate by the end of this little organizational adventure.

This doesn’t include anything from Chad’s side of the closet or the dressers, where I am sure I could find plenty of other items to donate – but I was intent on sticking to my 20 minute deadline.

We find it so much less overwhelming to keep things clean and organized around the casa when we just tackle small increments at a time. Twenty minutes in the kitchen before we go to bed, twenty minutes in the carport one afternoon, twenty minutes folding laundry or sorting through the closet. It saves our sanity but also doesn’t consume our schedules. Try it, you’ll like it.

The only downside to my newly organized corner of the closet? After finding 25 dresses that were all keepers, I cannot claim to have nothing to wear to the wedding - at least not with a straight face.
