Free Garden Upgrade

On Saturday we posted about our long-overdue yard work progress and included a pic of Casa de Whited. Here’s a reminder:

You’ll notice the teeny little garden area we’ve started in front of the walkway. Earlier in the summer we planted a couple of hosta plants, gardenias, junipers, and bleeding hearts (None of which are in bloom right now by the way).

Thanks to a very generous gift of slate from friends who moved back to Texas we were able to knock out a very simple and very free stone edge to jazz up the garden.

It’s not much but we think the slate helps define the area as a garden and makes it look planned rather than just a random grouping of shrubs.  Plus we were able to lay the larger, flatter pieces across the back line, making a walkway to our 2nd parking area.

We literally just raked back the straw and soil to define an edge and then laid the slate out, stacking up two layers of it. We can always move it around later if we find a better use for the slate or want a more substantial rock wall for the garden.  For the really wonky pieces, Chad used a steel hammer to break off the unwanted areas, be sure to wear gloves and goggles if you do this.
